Una de las fiestas religiosas más tradicionales del país se cumple cada año en Semana Santa en Popayán, Cauca. Celebradas desde el siglo XVI, el recorrido de cada procesión es cercano a dos kilómetros, donde un grupo de personas que se prepara todo el año para esa semana, lleva en sus hombros grandes estructuras de madera donde reposan imagenes que representan diversos episodios de los Evangelios y de la pasión y muerte de Jesucristo. La procesión es seguida por cientos de feligreses que van orando mientras portan cirios encendidos y visten hábitos religiosos. Por su valor tradicional, su aporte a la cultura y a la cohesión social, la UNESCO decidió incluirla en la Lista del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad en el año 2009.

One of the most traditional religious festivals of the country meets every year at Easter in Popayan , Cauca . Held since the sixteenth century, the route of each procession is close to two kilometers , where a group of people who prepare all year for that week , carry on his shoulders large wooden structures where lie images depicting various episodes of the Gospels and the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The procession is followed by hundred of parishioners who are praying while carrying lighted candles and wear religious habits . For its traditional value , their contribution to culture and social cohesion , UNESCO decided to include on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009 .
